Refractory Depression Brain Imaging Study

The Neurochemical Imaging Program in Mood Disorder at the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Centre at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), under direct supervision of Dr. Jeffrey Meyer, is studying brain changes associated with successful and unsuccessful antidepressant treatment. Dr. Meyer’s research has made headlines by providing a new depression model of how the brain chemical imbalance occurs in major depression, an illness that affects 5% of people globally. The current study is looking at refractory depression, a type of depression that is resistant to the first line of antidepressant treatment (SSRIs). Eligibility includes: - age 18 to 50 - diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder - poor previous response to antidepressants - not currently taking any street drugs - otherwise healthy

Pregnancy and Mental Health

We are conducting a research study that aims to understand why some women develop postpartum depression and others do not. The research is designed to test the idea that a genetic variation together with folate levels in a woman's blood can influence her risk for postpartum depression. The aim of the research is to find ways to help to reduce women's risk for postpartum depression by using nutritional supplements. We are looking for women who are pregnant and who have a history of mental health problems to participate in the study. The study involves meeting with a researcher 4 times: once during the pregnancy, and 3 times over the first 3 months of the postpartum period. The researchers can cover costs of travel for women to participate in the research at either St. Paul's or Children's and Women's Hospitals. Alternatively, study visits can be conducted at participants' homes or by email/phone.
